Creation of a market gardening city, a living, innovative lab to grow the city of tomorrow

28th edition of the Eco Action Trophies

“QUALITY OF LIFE” PRIZE: Romainville

Committed since 2011 to promote the development of urban farming, the city of Romainville is developing an unprecedented project in France: the market gardening city, a vertical eco-designed greenhouse which by the end of 2019 will accommodate a circular substrate market gardening farm, educational workshops, training events and living spaces open to all, while creating integration employment.

The market gardening city, located on a 600-square-metre plot at the heart of the Marcel-Cachin neighbourhood, will be the first “thinking and acting” urban farming lab in France. It aims to gather in a single space various complementary activities organised along 3 axes: a market gardening farm growing vegetables and plants providing a local food supply, an educational centre intended for an amateur or specialized audience, and a living space with meetings, including the organization of events such as conferences, round tables and seminars.
