Industrial demonstrators for the sustainable city: Rêve de Scènes Urbaines
Le démonstrateur industriel pour la ville durable Rêve de Scènes urbaines, piloté par VINCI, Véolia et Artelia, propose une démarche originale de coopération entre les acteurs publics et privés de la ville pour expérimenter et produire des solutions urbaines innovantes. Il s’inscrit initialement dans un territoire en constante mutation, Plaine Commune, lui-même situé au cœur du Grand Paris.
 
Pour fonctionner, le démonstrateur s’appuie sur un écosystème ouvert, dont les objectifs sont de mettre en œuvre :

  • un Living lab...
The industrial demonstrator for the sustainable city Rêve de Scènes Urbaines (Dream of Urban Scenes), led by VINCI, Véolia and Artelia, offers an original approach with cooperation between public and private stakeholders in the city to experiment and produce innovative urban solutions. It is initially part of a constantly changing region, Plaine Commune, itself located in the heart of Greater Paris.
 
To function, the demonstrator relies on an open ecosystem whose objectives are to implement:
  • a partnership platform for urban innovation,
  • a Living Lab of rebuilding the city on itself,
  • a showcase of the city's French know-how in the Plaine Commune region.
 
Every year, 150 ideas are collected and handed over to Plaine Commune. The region selects ideas that can help implement its strategic development plans.
The ideas and experiments produced as part of Rêve de Scènes Urbaines are intended for dissemination. In France, eight partner regions have joined the approach in order to benefit from ideas and to able to launch local experiments. The dynamics of the Rêve de Scènes Urbaines demonstrator can be increased thanks to the contribution of innovative companies from these regions.
 
Abroad, Rêve de Scènes Urbaines is part of the export efforts of the Strategic Sector Agreement "Industries for Construction", welcoming foreign delegations to France, and feeding local contacts of French companies with the association’s work.
Trilib', self-service waste sorting
Pour permettre à plus de Parisiens de trier plus simplement et pouvoir apporter une solution aux 10 % de Parisiens n’ayant pas de bac jaune, Citeo a conduit et financé une expérimentation à Paris : 40 stations trilib’, des containers de collecte de proximité disponibles 24h sur 24, implantés dans 4 arrondissements.
Mobilier urbain de tri et modulaire, la station trilib’ mutualise 5 flux : les emballages en verre, en métal, les bouteilles et flacons en plastique, les papiers et cartons et enfin les textiles. To allow more Parisians to sort their waste more simply and be able to provide a solution to the 10% of Parisians who do not have a yellow bin, Citeo conducted and financed an experiment in Paris: 40 trilib' stations, local collection containers available 24 hours a day, located in 4 districts.
Modular urban sorting furniture, the trilib' station brings together 5 streams: glass and metal packaging, plastic bottles and containers, paper and cardboard, and finally, textiles. Digital innovation and user service, station filling rates are available in real time on the opendata.paris.fr platform.
The City of Paris has decided to deploy these stations that facilitate waste sorting and collection.
Each station collects around an additional 25 tonnes of packaging each year and improves the quality of sorting.
For 9 out of 10 Parisians, they are easy to use and show that waste sorting is really useful. Since 2017, this still experimental arrangement has already allowed the sorting and recycling, among other things, of 55 tons of plastic bottles, or about 2 million bottles.
A thousand Trilib' stations will be deployed throughout Paris from the end of 2019 to 2021 by the City of Paris with the support of Citeo.
 
Protecting Oshakati from heavy flooding during the rainy season
La ville d'Oshakati est l'une des plus grandes villes du nord de la Namibie et souffre régulièrement de fortes inondations pendant la saison des pluies.
 
En collaboration avec son partenaire IMDC, Tractebel a développé une solution durable afin de protéger Oshakati de ces inondations. Cette solution consiste en la construction d'une digue au nord-ouest de la ville ainsi que de ponts et d'écluses pour détourner et contrôler les eaux d'inondation venant de l'Angola autour de la ville. Au sommet de la digue, une partie de la future rocade sera modélisée en 3D et construite selon le plan directeur...
Oshakati is one of the largest cities in northern Namibia and regularly suffers from heavy flooding during the rainy season.
 
In collaboration with its partner IMDC, Tractebel has developed a sustainable solution to protect Oshakati from these floods. This solution involves constructing an embankment to the north-west of the city as well as bridges and locks to divert and control floodwaters coming from Angola around the city. At the top of the embankment, part of the future ring road will be modelled in 3D and built according to Oshakati's design master plan.
 
Key project issues include:
 
  • Defining the necessary measures to adapt community development to climate change, taking into account the relative urgency of the risks identified and available resources in collaboration with all local stakeholders;
  • Developing land use including better management of water resources: run-off, groundwater, rivers, estuaries, coastal waters and designing flood protection measures.
Caen Peninsula: reconquering a territory
Le projet urbain Caen Presqu’île offre de nouvelles perspectives à l'aire de Caen la mer. Quartiers durables, circulations douces, ambiance fluviale, environnement végétalisé, activités économiques, culturelles et sportives…promettent un cadre et une qualité de vie inégalée.
Les communes de Caen, Mondeville et Hérouville Saint-Clair, la Communauté Urbaine Caen la mer, la Région Normandie et le syndicat mixte des Ports de Normandie, travaillent conjointement depuis 2010 à la mise en œuvre d’un projet de renouvellement urbain ambitieux sur le site de la Presqu’île, structurant pour le territoire.

The Caen Peninsula urban project offers new perspectives to the area of Caen la Mer. Sustainable neighbourhoods, soft transport modes, river atmosphere, green environment, economic, cultural and sporting activities all promise an unrivalled environment and quality of life.
 
The municipalities of Caen, Mondeville and Hérouville Saint-Clair, the Caen la Mer Urban Community, the Normandy Region and the Normandy Ports Joint Union have been working together since 2010 to implement an ambitious urban renewal project on the site of the peninsula, which is structuring for the region.
 
The Caen Peninsula urban project covers an operational perimeter of 300 hectares. The member communities of the order group agreed in 2016 on the need to set up a Major Interest Project (MIP), a memorandum of understanding created by Law No. 2014-366 of 24 March 2014 for access to housing and renovated urban planning provided for under Articles L.350-1 to 7 of the Urban Planning Code. The content of the MIP identifies the four structuring urban development projects currently in progress or planned for the future whose aim is to renew the strategic sector of the peninsula in an ambitious and sustainable way:

Solidarité Technologique is a French association working in Yaounde in the field of vocational training for disadvantaged young people and the recovery and recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment (W3E).
W3E is a category of waste that poses a dual problem: rapid growth and significant management constraints in view of certain toxic components. Developing countries are particularly exposed to this problem: their rapid economic and demographic growth, as well as the social and cultural changes brought about by such development, are leading to a sharp increase in the flow of W3E.
 
Since 2011, La Guilde, a French association recognised as a public utility, has been supporting Solidarité Technologique in setting up the first W3E recycling sector in Central Africa. A first treatment and recovery centre was opened in Yaounde in 2012.
Since then, its activity has been growing and Solidarité Technologique was awarded the Suez Initiative Prize - Institut de France for Social Entrepreneurship in June 2016. La Guilde and Solidarité Technologique are jointly launching the WEEECAM project, a major undertaking whose objective is to move the existing activity on to the semi-industrial scale.
 
The project, when it reaches full maturity at the end of year 5, will allow the full-time employment of 157 people. Partnerships will be established with various local players who will ensure the collection of W3E, in a thoughtful and constructive collaboration with the informal sector.
The success of the project will allow the validation of a model that can be transferred to other countries, particularly in Africa where such activity is currently absent.
The Hauts de l'Orne: a naturally innovative district
Un cadre de vie privilégié à deux pas de la Vallée de l’Orne et de la voie verte, sur un site riche de 7000 ans d’histoire : le futur ÉcoQuartier de Fleury-sur-Orne est actuellement développé par Caen la mer, la commune de Fleury-sur-Orne et Normandie Aménagement. A special place to live just a stone's throw from the Orne Valley and its green way on a site with 7,000 years of history: the future EcoDistrict de Fleury-sur-Orne is currently being developed by Caen la Mer, the commune of Fleury-sur-Orne and Normandie Aménagement (Normandy Development). The work is scheduled until 2030.

A GREEN NEIGHBOURHOOD
The first certified EcoDistrict (stage 2 since 2018) to be built in Caen la Mer, by 2030, the Hauts de l'Orne will offer its future inhabitants a wide choice of individual, semi-collective and collective housing. It will be located at the heart of 25 hectares of natural landscaped parks, ponds, gentle vegetated paths, and very close to shops, services and innovative sports and recreational facilities. Located a 10-minute drive from the centre of Caen, it will be served by the new rail tram from 2019 and benefit from access to a heat network.

AN IN-SITU NURSERY
To produce trees and plants locally, an innovative initiative, unique in France, was proposed by Normandie Aménagement: to set up a nursery directly in the neighbourhood. Located on the last stage of the EcoDistrict, which will not be completed for 10 years, this nursery has been home to all the plants needed for the future landscaping of the district since 2018. In the long run, more than 40,000 plant species will have been grown directly on the site.
Lifou Island: roadmap to 100% renewable energy by 2020
L’objectif de ce projet est de réussir à substituer les 2.5 millions de litres de fioul utilisés actuellement pour la production électrique sur l’île de Lifou, en Nouvelle Calédonie par des énergies 100 % renouvelables d’ici à 2020, et faire ainsi de cette île une « vitrine » de la transition énergétique dans le Pacifique.

This project sets out to successfully replace the 2.5 million litres of fuel oil currently used for electricity generation on the island of Lifou, New Caledonia, with 100% renewable energy by 2020, thus making the island a "showcase" for energy transition in the Pacific.
 
In particular, ENGIE has designed an energy master plan for this project to make the most of the island's resources on the one hand, and to organise the sharing of services expected between production (renewable energy, gas etc) and the network manager on the other.
 
A feasibility study and risk calculation were also carried out to ensure a local, sustainable and renewable energy network.
 
To achieve the target set, the island's energy mix will rely on the development of new capacity in solar (up 5.4 MW), wind (up 0.8 MW) and biofuel (up 1.2m litres), coupled with storage (5 MW).
 
The benefits of this project are threefold, allowing to:
 
  •  Strengthen the territory's energy self-sufficiency,
  • Reduce its carbon footprint,
  • Address intermittency and optimise the penetration of renewable energies within the island’s mix.
Study of the rehabilitation and improvement of Lake Zigh, Azerbaijan
Le concept du projet est de coupler la réhabilitation du lac Zigh, pollué depuis plusieurs années par le déversement d’eaux contaminées en provenance des zones industrielles avoisinantes, avec un développement urbain créateur de valeur dans la région de Baku, qui compte plus d’un million d’habitants.
Le but étant d’avoir une opération globale bénéficiaire, aussi bien pour l’environnement que pour l’économie.
D’importantes études préalables à l’opération de réhabilitation ont été menées par le groupe ENGIE :
- Collecte des données : rapports géologiques, topographiques, batimétriques, enquêtes...
The project’s concept is to couple the rehabilitation of Lake Zigh, which has been polluted for several years by the dumping of contaminated water from neighbouring industrial areas, with a value-creating urban development in the Baku region, which has a population of more than one million.
 
The aim is to have an operation that benefits everyone, in terms of both the environment and the economy.
 
Major pre-rehabilitation studies were carried out by the ENGIE group:
  • Data collection: geological, topographical and bathymetric reports, environmental surveys...
  • Basic design studies: hydrology, construction of sludge drying beds in the eastern zone, dredging the lake and channel and transporting sludge to the drying beds, construction of a cement-bentonite wall and preparation of the recovery area, construction of an urban park and a green belt around the lake...
  • Rehabilitation of the site is underway with technical solutions adapted to local know-how. They will be evaluated on the basis of international clean-up standards.
 
Advisory services on public transport and low-carbon bus technologies in Florianópolis

The mission’s objective is to provide the project promoter (SUDERF-Superintendent in Charge of the Development of the Metropolitan Region of Florianópolis) with decision-making tools for planning a "low-carbon" bus network system in the region of Florianópolis:
 
• To analyse possible technological options and identify suitable locations for introducing electric and hybrid bus technology and its charging infrastructure,
• Conduct a total cost analysis to facilitate investment decisions for different low-carbon bus technologies,
• Advise on technical needs to implement the technologies selected and continue developing the integrated public transit system,
• Advise on how low-carbon bus systems can be implemented.
 
This advisory mission was intended to help customers make an informed decision about how to decarbonise their bus fleet while finding technical solutions and innovative financing to minimise, or even cancel out altogether, the economic impact of this transition to a decarbonised transport system.
 
 Developing guidelines for adapting to climate change in relation to urban planning and design in Flanders

Engie has been commissioned by the Flemish Spatial Planning Authority to develop guidelines and solutions to adapt to climate change.
 
In the first phase of the project, an analysis of the impacts of climate change in Flanders is completed, using different scenarios.
 
This analysis includes an assessment of the magnitude of impacts, factors that determine the extent of the effect and their spatial differentiation.
 
The focus is on the urban effect of heat islands, floods and droughts. Maps are prepared to show specific vulnerability to the effects of different urban areas in Flanders.
 
The general vision developed and the "toolkit" of measures will guide future initiatives by the Flemish Spatial Planning Authority and will provide an objective reference on the need for adaptation measures and the means to implement them.
 
Topics addressed by the guidelines include:

  • Green roofs and facades,
