Improving sanitary conditions and preventing water-borne diseases in Burundi

The project covers a commune in a peri-urban area: Mutimbuzi, a province of rural Bujumbura in Burundi, west of the capital and close to the Congolese border.

It aims to improve the sanitary conditions of the target communities and reduce the spread of water-borne diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea. Beyond the establishment of hydraulic and sanitary facilities, real work on awareness raising/behavioural education has been developed using a comprehensive participatory approach to ensure long-term improvements.
